As a “professional prophet,” Jonah’s calling was simple, to say the words God put in his mouth.

Why did God want to save some societies and destroy others?

Jonah confronts us with a question that probes the deepest recesses of our hearts: Are we OK with our enemies receiving mercy?

Though Jonah doesn’t say anything to God, he responds to his call by running away. He’s running away from God’s calling, God’s presence, and God’s word.

By reading the Ninevites’ repentance in light of Jonah’s sea voyage, we recognize that God has arranged everything according to his will.
