Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

From the Show

Why did Jesus have to die?

The perfect and last Adam who has fulfilled all righteousness, he hands that status over to us as his co-heirs and takes our filthy rags, sin and death, and puts them on himself. So, when he's hanging on the cross, he becomes the greatest sinner who ever lived. All of our sins are nailed to his cross, he's covered in them, he's wearing our death stroud, and wearing that becomes the object of hell: God's judgment. And through that suffering, he merits for us eternal life; he's raised on the third day as the beginning of the resurrection of the dead. So, as the Gospel goes forward now, people believe people are united to Christ from every nation and tongue and tribe, and then one day he'll press the play button again and the resurrection will be completed. Jesus is the beginning of it, and he pressed pause so that there would be an interim period for people to be united to him. He's going to resume the resurrection, as it were, so that the rest of his body is raised with him. — Michael Horton
