If Jesus is God, How Was He Still Able to Die?

From the Show

If Jesus is God, how was he still able to die?

The important thing here is that you don't have two people, a human being and a god uniting, nor do you have one nature that is sort of schizophrenia, partly divine and partly human. Rather, what you have is the Word becoming flesh, as John tells us in the first chapter of John. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us; “The Word was with God, and the Word was God and he became flesh.” And so God, the second person of the Holy Trinity assumed our humanity. He didn't change in the process, he added something without changing who he was, eternally. That's really important. So, when Jesus dies on the cross, the one who suffers is God, but he doesn't suffer according to His divinity. Does that make sense? Because he really is God and he really is human. He suffers according to his humanity, but the one who suffers according to his humanity is also God, God incarnate, God in the flesh, God become human. — Michael Horton

Questions in this Episode

1. What do you think about the ideas that the church has been taken captive to outrage culture? It seems like maybe there is a place for righteous anger. What do you think?

2. What’s the difference between a Major Prophet and a Minor Prophet?

3. In Jude it says, “And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.” Is the authorial intent limited to the victims of the false teachers?

4. Mark 14 says that Jesus’ soul was sorrowful even to the point of death while he was in the garden of Gethsemane and then later on the cross it seems like Jesus really did experience suffering and pain.  And I know that Isaiah 53 describes Jesus as the suffering servant, but what I’m struggling to understand is how this fits with Jesus being God?
