How to Celebrate the Lord's Supper
From the Show
Should we celebrate the Lord’s supper with joy and thanksgiving or should it be a solemn and reverent event?
The more important question [than how often should we be celebrating the Lord’s Supper] is, what is it? Understandably, if people just think that [the Lord’s Supper] is an object lesson, that can get pretty old after a while. But, if it's actually the food and drink of our souls, if it's actually God putting his stamp, his pledge, his seal, on his word, once again promising to us after a week of not being sure whether we've really out-sinned God's grace, then we need it every time the word is preached…When the church came together, we read in 1 Corinthians and in Acts, that when the church came together they celebrated the Lord's Supper; “shared in the apostles teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread, and the prayers.” This was normal. And in 1 Corinthians, Paul says, “when you come together as the church, is it communion that you're celebrating?” So, there really was this expectation that when the people of God come together on the Lord's day, the word will be preached and it will be ratified, certified, by God's pledge in the sacraments. — Michael Horton
