How Do I Avoid Reading the Bible Legalistically?
From the Show
Does Jesus Contradict the Old Testament?
"The era that we're living in right now is the productive intermission, as the Holy Spirit brings repentance and faith to sinners and so unites them as one body to Christ, their head. This is the day of salvation. It is not the Day of Judgment. When Christ returns the second time, then it is the day of judgment. When Christ actually comes, we see more clearly that the one event is in two stages. Think of John 12:47, ‘For I did not come to judge the world but to save the world,’ or 2nd Timothy 4:1, ‘I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom.’ The Last Judgment is when Jesus returns. Now when he does come again, it will be the day of vengeance of our God. Paul calls it the day of his wrath, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 tells us about that. But right now it is not a day of vengeance. Isn't that wonderful news? I mean, this is why we go out to all world and announce the gospel and baptize, make disciples, teach them, plant churches…why? Because now is the day of salvation. It's not the day of vengeance. It's not the Day of Judgment. We don't call God's fire down on our enemies. Instead, we preach the gospel. If they don't accept it, we move on to another town." — Michael Horton
