How Should We Celebrate the Lord's Supper?
The Lord's Supper is the tangible, visible, communal meal where we receive Christ’s body and blood for our lives through faith and the power of the Holy Spirit without any change in the bread in the wine.
Just as surely as we take that bread and that cup so surely we take Christ as our sacrifice once offered on Calvary. Our all atoning, all-sufficient Savior. Recall the words of institution in the synoptic gospels: Paul says in 1st Corinthians 11:23-26, “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”
It's like the rainbow, you know, Noah’s rainbow. God says, ‘I will set a rainbow in the heavens every time it rains and I will remember.’ He doesn't just say [that] you will remember, I will remember, never to send a flood such a catastrophic flood like this again. And the key term that Paul uses in 1 Corinthians 10:16 is koinonia, from which we get the word communion. Just as the pagans participate in the poisonous life of the demons through their idol feasts, Paul says we participate in the saving life of Christ, through faith. That happens in the word and it happens in holy communion. — Michael Horton
