One of the things that you see in situations like Josh Duggar’s is that, often times, we assume abusers are people we can easily spot—the person off the street who looks funny, who doesn’t have any teeth, and creeps people out. But a lot of research shows that in cases of abuse, even in the church, comes from those who you wouldn’t have expected. If we don’t have safety protocols as congregations these kinds of things will continue to happen. It is very important for church leaders to talk about this, to be transparent about it, and to build structures into our church to train people to identify the markers of abuse.

Why do these kinds of stories and scandals keep coming out? Shouldn’t churches be difficult places for these kinds of figures to hide instead of easy ones?
