Core Christianity: Tough Questions Answered

How Much of the Old Testament is About Jesus?

host Adriel Sanchez aired December 23, 2020

Episode 603 Show Notes

From the Show

It seems that Jesus is walking in the footsteps of Israel. For example, Israel comes out of Egypt, and in Matthew’s Gospel he quotes Hosea in reference to Jesus, saying, “out of Egypt I called my Son.” And then what happens after Israel comes out of Egypt? They go through the water. In Matthew chapter 3 Jesus is then baptized by John in the Jordan. Then after Israel goes through the water, what happened to them? They were tested for 40 years. What happens to Jesus after his baptism? He is tempted by the devil for forty days. After Israel’s testing, they received God’s law at Mt. Sinai. What does Jesus do after his testing in the wilderness? He goes on a mountain and preaches that he is the fulfillment of the law. Everywhere where Israel failed and fell short, this one, the eternal Son of God, obeys.

Questions in this Episode

  1. 1. I want to be a Christian, but I am not sure how. Can you please help me?

2.  Could you explain Mark 2:21-22 for me please?

3. I know in my head that God is good and uses things for His Glory, but both myself and my daughter have learning disabilities that make life very difficult. Why would God allow that and how can it possibly be used for His Glory?

4. In Hosea 11:1, where it says, “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son,” is it referring to Jesus or Israel? I have heard pastors argue for both interpretations. It seems that if all of these Old Testament texts were only about Jesus than the Israelites in the Old Testament would not have actually known what they were about. What do you think?
