Does God Speak to Us Personally?
From the Show
Does God speak to each of us personally?
When you hear God's word, it's like the very breath of God is on you. Here's what the Holy Spirit does with the Word of God. He gives you understanding in a special way; he applies it to you. This is what we sometimes call illumination. The Holy Spirit will take the Word of God that you're reading or that you're hearing preached, and he'll illuminate it to you so that you can understand it, so that you can receive it, so you're transformed by it. I remember back when I was a new believer getting some excellent advice from an elder in the church I was attending at the time, he said, “every time you open up the Bible to read it, pray that God will give you understanding.” That's how you're going to hear and learn to hear God's voice for you personally. Go to the scriptures and pray that God would use them to minister to you and to transform you. — Michael Horton
Questions in this Episode
1. What are your thoughts about vacation Bible school and the cheesy themes that are often devoid of the gospel. Should we be sending our children to them? How do we talk to family about this?
2. I have a friend who believes that God speaks to him personally. I don’t experience that and I get the feeling that I am missing out on a deeper relationship with God. My question is, does God desire to speak with us each personally and if so, how do I learn to hear his voice?
3. In Episode 54, you said that creation is good and that God is going to renew creation. My understanding is that creation is going to be burned up and there will be a new heaven and a new earth. Can you clarify that a bit?
