Do We Have to Believe the Miracles in the Bible Actually Happened?

From the Show

My friend struggles with depression and often talks to me about doubting God. How do I respond to him?

We don't we tell people who have cancer [to] just read the Bible and pray more and it will go away? Why do we say such harmful things to people suffering from a serious medical condition such as depression? Here's one thing that's really important for us. The mind is part of the body. It's an organ, just like the lungs or the liver, and we need to come to terms with that fact: deppression happens in an organ of the body. Now, of course, as with every illness, we can be so downcast that we wonder if God has forgotten us, or worse, is judging us. Sickness is not God's judgment.

We have no idea of knowing God's unsearchable purposes for our life, but we do know that he is working at all together for our salvation…when it seems the darkest, God is actually triumphing. How do you know that? Because of the cross. That is exactly where the world said, “it's over.” And God said, “No, it's just begun.” There, God, in His greatest show of what the world saw as weakness triumphed over sin and death. That's our confidence, that God knows what he's doing and that you can't read what God is doing from the surface of the events that we're going through. — Michael Horton
